Residential Air Conditioning Best Practices Report

The Residential Air Conditioning Best Practices Report (Volume R2) presents a comparative analysis of six residential air conditioning (AC) programs, each of which focused on increasing the efficiency of residential AC through retrofit and natural replacement purchases. Technologies addressed include high-efficiency residential central, room unit, and through-the-wall air conditioners and heat pumps. The programs included direct customer rebates, incentives to upstream market actors, and whole-house approaches with AC efficiency as a program element. While the programs took varied approaches to reaching the air conditioning market, underlying each was the concept that incentives should either complement information and training programs or precede them in a market transformation process. Three key themes that affect multiple program components were identified: use of financial incentives, ease of participation, and incorporation of installation practices.
